Why We Are Here
The San Diego region continues to be served by single-runway
Lindbergh Field, located near downtown San Diego. Due to its urban
location, the single runway, terrain limitations and limited expansion
possibilities, replacement and/or augmentation has been discussed for
decades.
The
San Diego County Regional Airport Authority (SDCRAA), established
on Janauary 1, 2003, took over the Airport Site Selection Program
from the San Diego Association of
Governments (SANDAG). SANDAG had already published and Airport
Economic Analysis showing the economic need for a new airport.
While a concept dual-runway airport is the ideal solution, finding
a suitable location has stymied authorities, who have authored over
25 airport studies over recent decades.
Within the past two months, the
San Diego County Regional Airport Authority (SDCRAA) teamed up
with the San
Diego Union-Tribune to initiate on-line dialogues regarding the
current airport selection study in a project titled Fly
Into The Future.
The end results of these discussions will be presented
to the SDCRAA soon. The North County Times has an
article highlighting the report. Fourteen groups conversed for
about 10 days on airport issues. After completion, a Fifteenth group
was established from those who wished to continue discussions.
Some participants of Group 15 met Sat. July 23, 2005
to continue discussions, find common ground and begin a process of
citizen advocacy for a reasonable and workable solution to San Diego's
airport dilemma. Click
