SDCRAA Public Working Group (reported
by Sharon Thurston)
This meeting was supposed to be presentations
on the 2 sites in East County, the North County site, Rancho
Guejito, and the
three military sites. I will bring copies of the reports. This
is a synopsis.
The only real information was on the 2 East County sites. Neither
site has enough positives. Both have significant negatives. Total
estimated cost, including rapid transit. $16,699B for Campo and
$17,408B for the desert. This does not include a lot of items,
including mitigation costs of $.2-1.6B for Campo and $.8-4.9B
for the desert. I talked with a few people after the meeting
and we all agreed this cost is grossly understated or as one
lady from the marines said, "just the tip of the iceberg".
Also one person mentioned the apathy in San Diego is appalling.
The Rancho Guejito (northeast of Escondido) review showed a plausible
site with one runway (12,000 feet) and the possibility of another
in the future. According to the report, there are severe site
and cost issues but no numbers were included. The capacities
of LA area airports were discussed, but generally the group thinks
San Diego would pay for an airport which would mostly be used
by residents of bordering counties. also if we built this as
a supplemental airport, SDIA would have to be remodeled at significant
cost.
The military met with our group on January 11 and our group is
requesting more information before they have a presentation for
the board which is supposed to be February 13. There was discussion
about using North Island as a supplemental AP with passengers
checking in at Lindbergh and being shuttled to North Island.
The next public group meeting is February 14. Another meeting
is planned for the first week in March at request of several
group members. The final group meeting before the board makes
a decision is scheduled for March 29th.
There was some discussion about landing and facility fees.. |
